What to Expect with Apple in 2012
Welcome Viewers,
First off, I would like to start this weeks post by apologizing about not adding a post last week. I had a lot going on and didn’t get home on Thursday until around 11:30 pm. I didn’t get any free time really until Sunday and Monday and decided to just wait until this week to do my next post. So again I am terribly sorry and will try not to do that again.
The last blog post was about what to expect from Android in 2012, so I thought it would make sense to do an article about Apple in 2012. So today’s post will be about what to expect from Apple in the upcoming year. We will be going over things like new product designs to new software designs. Also I will talk about some rumors indicating the “death” of a couple products. Talking about death, all of you have probably heard about Steve Job’s death by now. For those of you that don’t know, Steve Job’s was the CEO of Apple, he was the visionary for Apple. He is who really brought Apple to the top of the market. Now that he has died, along with others, I am curious to see how Apple’s new CEO does. Steve Jobs was known for his vision and being able to see what the market wanted and give it to them. Many people out there don’t think that Tim Cook, Apple’s new CEO, has the vision or enough experience to do all that Steve Jobs did. He is very young and there is a lot of pressure right now on him. With this information, I predict that 2012 will be an interesting year for Apple.
As many of you probably saw on Apple’s website, they have announced their next version of Mac OS X, 10.8 Mountain Lion. This is the first major announcement Apple has made since the death of Steve Jobs, and I think Tim Cook did a nice job. They are adding some nice features like Notification Center, AirPlay Mirroring, and more. They really are making the Macs more and more like the iPad. Soon there won’t be any difference except a hardware keyboard. They are trying to integrate it more with Social Networking and to stuff like iCloud and Twitter. Also they are adding some more ways to file share things between two devices. Some people were expecting the next OS update to come with Siri but that obviously isn’t happening. You can read the whole overview of Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion at http://www.apple.com/macosx/mountain-lion/
Another thing people think might come out this year is the iTV. I already did a whole article about this rumor so I am only going to talk about it briefly. The iTV is rumored to be the next generation of the Apple TV. It is said to be a full TV, not just a box, and be without a remote and controlled by your voice. The TV will be controlled by Siri so you could talk in your normal voice and naturally and it would understand you and what you are trying to ask or say. One thing that is pretty much a sure thing is a redesigned iPhone. People think that the iPhone 5 will be a sleek curved handset with a redesigned backing. People didn’t really like the glass back to the iPhone because it was easily broken. At first people thought about an aluminum backing like the iPad, but ran into the issue of the signal. The aluminum case would block out the signal. Now they are guessing for a sort of rubberized, plastic backing kind of like the original iPhones. Also there are rumors of an edge-to-edge screen. There was a debate on how to get an edge to edge screen to work with the ratio of the retina display, but someone figured out the math to solve the problem. I think that the edge-to-edge screen is very possible and may just happen. One rumor I found about the iPhone 5 talked about a quad core iPhone. The iPhones right now don’t have a very impressive processor right now, but if they put a quad core processor in it, I would be impressed. Another possible redesign is the iPad 3.
There haven’t been many rumors of the iPad 3 that I have seen expect the rumor of an iPad Mini. Well, I saw one rumor of a retina display on the iPad 3 but that is pretty much going to happen. Although, today I found a rumor discussing the possibility of an iPad Mini release. The iPad Mini would be too small like an iPod Touch, but also not too big like the iPad currently. So people are guesstimating for an iPad that is maybe 7″ instead of 10″. Steve Jobs would have never allowed something like this, but the market is moving towards smaller tablets like 7″ screens. The rumors speculate the iPad Mini would be released in the Fall of 2012.
Rumors say that redesigns are coming to the Macs too. People think the MacBook Pros will get redesigned to look more like the MacBook Air, a curved thin design with no disk drive. Actually, people speculate Apple is going to remove all the optical drives in their devices. You will have to buy a separate USB drive if you want one. This change does make sense to me, but I don’t know if it is a good time. People had a big hissy fit a while ago when Apple removed floppy drives from all their devices, but they recovered. Maybe the same will happen now. Also, if you think about it, how often do you really use your disk drive. Unless you work with it or record music to CDs and things, you may find you don’t use it as much as you may think. One thing about taking the drive out is it gives you more room for things like solid state disk and a bigger battery. Some more updates coming the Mac series is thought to be things like a faster processor, better graphics card, better battery life, and a retina display.
These are just a few of the many possibilities of Apple this year. I tried to hit on all of the big ones. I am interested in seeing how Tim Cook handles the year and how Apple changes now that Steve Jobs is gone. If you think I have left any big rumors out just leave a comment below, and even if you don’t, just let me know how you liked the article.
I’m out,

The one thing that I might mention is that a USB 2.0 drive is required to sync your iDevices. Sure, iOS 5 has pretty much fixed that, but there still is the external HDD’s, USB drives (which I use weekly for class) and of course charging the various iDevices.
I am very much anticipating the iPad 3!! I’ll be looking forward to a full recap of the keynote supposedly on March 7th! ;D I don’t often have time to watch these… maybe this year!
I haven’t heard much about anticipating Siri on Mountain Lion, but I have heard rumors of Siri coming to iPod 4, iPad 2 and 3, and iPhone 4. That might be nice. Also, something else worth noting, if you are one of the unfortunate people with an older Mac, don’t look forward to Mountain Lion. It’s only going to be available for post-2009 Macbook Pro, post-Mid 2007 Mac Mini, post-2007 iMacs, and post-2008 Macbook Air.
